A devoted seventy-seven-year-old resident of Franklin, Michael Moody led a life marked by service and volunteerism. After graduating from East Tennessee State University in 1968, he joined the Army Corps of Engineers as a second lieutenant and served in Vietnam, overseeing road upgrades amid challenging monsoon conditions. Upon his return home, Michael saw a divided nation, but his military service imparted resilience and gratitude. . In retirement, he volunteered with SCORE, mentoring small business owners, and joined the Red Cross providing relief in disaster-stricken areas. He has been deployed multiple times and has witnessed the impact of helping people during their darkest moments. Michael's commitment extends to his involvement with Vietnam Veterans Chapter 1140, where he serves as secretary, honoring fallen comrades and raising awareness about the effects of Agent Orange. Besides his volunteer work, he appreciates his life in Franklin, enjoying the small-town charm and proximity to metropolitan areas. Through his lifelong commitment to service, Michael exemplifies the spirit of giving and makes a difference in the lives of others.
A distinguished military veteran, John Purves is known for his remarkable career as an Air Force pilot and instructor. Born in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., in 1933, Purves attended Lawrence College for degrees in mathematics and physics and initially intended to avoid the draft and the Korean War. However, unexpectedly joining the ROTC and passing the flight physical, he embarked on a life-changing journey. After undergoing rigorous training in Texas and Arizona, he was assigned to a base in France during the Cold War. He learned how to fly F-100 jets and prepared for nuclear weapons deployment before moving on to teach fighter pilots in California. He also eventually flew the F-4 Phantom in Vietnam for combat missions. While in Europe, he participated in numerous weapons competitions, and out of sixty-four pilots from around the world, he took second place in the competition. He often used his knowledge of mathematics and physics to decipher the exact moment he needed to drop the weapons. He used this as a background to be able to teach in the Top Gun schools, where one had to do low level navigation and deliver a weapon. Throughout his twenty-two year military tenure, Purves flew combat missions across Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, earning recognition and receiving esteemed honors such as the Distinguished Flying Cross. His unwavering commitment to the Air Force and dedication to training future pilots shows his exceptional character. While his military career has brought him great fulfillment, Purves cherishes his role as a devoted husband to his wife, Alexandra, and a caring father to his two daughters.
Born in Nashville, Watt Crockett attended Montgomery Bell Academy and then attended Vanderbilt University, where he majored in business administration. Watt proactively joined the Navy in 1957, witnessed such illustrious figures as Winston Churchill and served on the USS Randolph (CV-15). Watt, who had risen to the rank of lieutenant junior grade, served as an officer of the deck and took charge of the ship for four hours at a time. Demonstrated resourcefulness and handled a man overboard situation quickly. Post-Navy, Watt began a career in the insurance industry at John Hancock and met his future wife in the field. Humble and wise, he appreciates listening to experienced individuals. He also cherishes the advice of his wife and recognizes the importance of heeding the wisdom of loved ones. Watt, who upholds integrity and advocates kindness, believes that his passion in life is making a positive impact on the lives of others.

Gene underwent basic training with the famous 101st Airborne Division, and embarked on a remarkable journey. Deployed to Japan instead of Korea, he supervised Japanese stevedores and developed an appreciation for their resilience. After completing his service, he used the GI Bill to earn bachelor's and master's degrees at Mississippi College. He settled in Pensacola with his wife Carol and became an assistant principal and later an elementary school principal, leaving a lasting impact on students' lives. He moves to Nashville to be closer to family, and reflects on the importance of teamwork and camaraderie in the military. His legacy extends beyond service, as his dedication to education and love for his family is inspiring.
Herb Schlicht was born in Port Huron, Michigan. Born to German immigrant parents, he was educated at Port Huron Junior College and Western Michigan University, majoring in Business Administration. Drafted into the Army at the age of twenty-three during the Vietnam War, Herb prepared himself for the challenges ahead. Basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, tested his spirit while balancing his passion for baseball. Despite challenges, including an unfair promotion denial, Herb's strong principles led him to resign from the military. Transitioning to civilian life, he began a career in the insurance industry, utilizing skills he gained from his military service. Herb's journey shaped his personal growth and taught him open-mindedness and empathy. Active in organizations such as the JCs, he made a positive impact in his community. He eventually formed the Denver JC boxing program, and he helped improve connections within the community. Herb moved to Williamson County to be closer to his son and daughter.
Carroll Owen is from Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He filled a century with bravery, resilience and unwavering commitment. Raised as the youngest son of a Baptist minister, his strong faith shaped his character. During World War II, Carroll was drafted into the Army in March 1943 after beginning his ministerial college studies. He underwent rigorous training before being sent to the European Theater of Operations. He saw firsthand the horrors of war and endured intense enemy fire on the German border. Despite the challenges, Carroll displayed tremendous courage and resilience, even while suffering from Trench Foot. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, an Expert Marksman Medal and a European Theater of Operations Ribbon with two battle stars. After the war, Carroll followed his calling and became an ordained minister. His calling took him to Tennessee, where he eventually settled with his wife. Carroll's dedication to his family was paramount. He cherished spending quality time with them and sharing his love of hunting.
Carroll's decision to join a combat unit instead of seeking reprieve demonstrated his unwavering honor and duty. His story serves as an inspiration, reflecting a life well lived and a lasting impact.
