Review

Initial Impressions

I first watched this film on Disney+ and have rewatched it multiple times since it was also available on Netflix. This film has become one of my comfort watches. Although I was initially frustrated because I hadn't read the book before the film's release and was exposed to spoilers, I eventually read the book through iPusnas, which allowed me to appreciate the film even more.

Plot and Fidelity to the Book

The film closely follows the plot of Agatha Christie's novel, maintaining the essence of the story while infusing it with a more theatrical presentation. The story revolves around Hercule Poirot, who is tasked with solving a murder that occurs on the luxurious Orient Express train. The mystery unfolds as Poirot interviews the passengers, each of whom is a suspect.

Character Portrayals

  • Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh): Branagh not only directs but also stars as the iconic detective. While his portrayal of Poirot includes a grey mustache instead of the expected black, his performance captures Poirot's meticulous and eccentric nature.
  • John Cassetti (Johnny Depp): Depp delivers a compelling performance as the sinister character. His presence adds a layer of intensity to the film.
  • Pilar Estravados (Penelope Cruz): Cruz brings depth to her role, complementing the ensemble cast.
  • Other Notable Cast Members: Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench, Willem Dafoe, and Daisy Ridley contribute significantly to the film's allure with their strong performances.

Visual and Auditory Elements

One of the most striking aspects of the film is its visual appeal. The cinematography, set design, and costume design are exquisite, capturing the opulence of the 1930s and the grandeur of the Orient Express. The film's use of color and lighting enhances the mysterious and suspenseful atmosphere. The makeup and hairstyling deserve special mention for their attention to detail, which faithfully represents the characters as described in the book.

Overall Evaluation

"Murder on the Orient Express" is a beautifully crafted film that successfully translates the intrigue and complexity of Agatha Christie's novel to the screen. While the theatrical elements may differ from the book, they add a unique charm to the film. The movie is engaging, visually stunning, and well-acted, making it a worthy adaptation of the classic mystery.
